Free iPhone Application For New Students
A university offers a free iPhone application that was developed to help students begin their first term.
The University of Central Lancashire, Preston said that the mobile service will provide maps and details of leisure and local transport.
There will be details of campus facilities and access to college students email accounts.
Director of Learning, Michael Ahern, said that will connect students to “lead a full life.”
He believes that it is the first iPhone application in a UK university.
Monitoring
“At the beginning of the term is always stopped by asking students for directions, we now have the information they need in their pockets,” said Ahern.
“As you walk around campus can provide information on classes, libraries and places to eat,” he said.
The wireless link to a student manual alternative, written by colleagues, and can also access the services of the association of students, such as allowing students to book tickets for groups.
Students are more likely to study part-time – or have jobs long – and Mr Ahern said a mobile phone is a convenient way for universities to keep in touch with people employed in many different places.
“It’s a different track to reach students,” said Ahern.
But he says there a question about the lack of access for students who have no iPhone – and while not involved in a single package, the same information can be accessed via laptops and other mobile phones that can access the Internet.
The university has invested in a single 1m laptops and online access for students who can not afford their own computer, “he said.
The iPhone “applications” are tailored information services that can be downloaded on this type of mobile phone.
It is estimated that 100,000 applications will be available later this year, with 1.8 billion euros have been downloaded so far.
